Larry Boyer, a.k.a. Rock doctor, grew up as a Navy brat and spent most of his time growing up in Southern California in the 50’s and 60’s. He completed his undergraduate studies at UC Santa Barbara where he pursued a double major in Geology and Environmental Biology. After completing his undergrad he attained a Masters in Geology at UCSB and did a LOT of surfing.
He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Paleontology from the Department of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (whew!) at the University of Chicago, and did his field work as a guest student at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He did a stint as a Post-doc at Yale, and worked on wake detection at the Naval Underwater systems center in New London, CT.
Larry came to the Midwest 23 years ago, lured by the majestic mountains and mild winters…he got a job teaching Geology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He then became Assistant Manager of the Environmental Division for an A&E design firm in Milwaukee. After 11½ years in a corporate setting, he moved on to start his own sustainable site design firm, TerraFirma Environmental, where he pretty much does what he feels like, including appearing as the host of his own segment on the Healthy Style show, “View From The Rock”.
His hobbies are racing cars, teaching performance driving, a little carpentry, and Shorin Ryu Karate. He lives near Milwaukee, WI with his lovely wife, and an old cat in a stone cottage above a creek.
